Working in the rain

It rained three times so far this week. This morning a gentle rain was falling; a rain that reminded me of days in Seattle; a rain that would not stop any true northwesterner from being outside; a rain that never stopped me from working in the yard and garden. So outside I went. I’m expecting … Continue reading »

The Color and the Brown

Bushes are brown, but flowers still appear, giving color and hope in this dry summer. And it rained this morning (oh happy day!).

Trees in the Dry Summer of 2012

I must admit that I have not been a good tree keeper this summer. It has been hot. It has been dry. And I don’t usually water. A lot of times, that does not matter because many plants are pretty resilient. But sometimes I should be more vigilant. We’ve lost trees to hot and dry … Continue reading »

Garden in the Dry Summer of 2012

This year’s garden (showing what I planted and where I planted what I planted). What this does not show is what is actually in the garden. I used the seed I had, some of which was pretty old. By the time I did my planting, it was already pretty hot and pretty late. So not … Continue reading »

I wanted a house so that I could have a washer and dryer

When we bought our first house, I used to quip that I wanted a house so that I could have my own washer and dryer. When we bought our second house, one big selling feature was this … … a clothes line in the backyard. I was elated. Not only that, there were clothes lines … Continue reading »

Miscellaneous Musings

This was supposed to be Miscellaneous Monday Musings, but, it is now Tuesday, so we just have Miscellaneous Musings. Trumpet vine is beautiful … But it is insidious – sneaking about underground and cropping up everywhere. I’m not sure the edamame beans are going to survive the persistent grazing. I’m pretty sure that the peas … Continue reading »

Raspberries!

When I was little, I would get a treat every summer. Once, every summer, my mum would buy me a half-pint of fresh raspberries and I would eat the entire half-pint in one sitting. Back then, raspberries were only available in season, and then, as now, they were very expensive. So I would get just … Continue reading »

Mulching Experiments

Leaves, Straw, or Grass Clippings A number of years ago, I discovered the benefits of mulching around my tomato plants with straw. This works really well. The straw prevents the soil from eroding during the rain. It also helps the soil retain moisture. What I mainly noticed was that the straw eliminated dirt splatter onto the … Continue reading »
